"No
Child Left Behind"
The “No
Child Left Behind” project is a grassroots issue designed to raise
awareness in America’s communities of the need for education reform.
Unit clubs in the state of California have taken great strides to make
this a prime motivating effort.
On January
8, 2002, President Bush signed into law the “No Child Left Behind”
Act of 2001. The Act is the most sweeping reform of the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act (ESEA) since ESEA was enacted in 1965. It redefines
the federal role in K-12 education and will help close the achievement
gap between disadvantaged and minority students and their peers. It is
based on four basic principles: stronger accountability for results, increased
flexibility and local control, expanded options for parents, and an emphasis
on teaching methods that have been proven to work.

The National
Federation of Republican Women has devoted a great deal of space to this
project. Here in California, our clubs continue to promote this education
initiative using many innovative and creative activities.
The San Ramon
Valley Republican Women Federated has for the last three years distributed
encyclopedias to surrounding elementary schools and individuals who have
heard of our project. To date, the SRVRWF has distributed 76 encyclopedias.
The encyclopedias have been donated by a number of individuals and organizations
(Discovery Shop, etc). Most of the encyclopedias have been Britannica’s
with dates from 1988 to present. The following pictures are from a school
in Richmond.
